WHY SHOULD I LEARN SIGNING EXACT ENGLISH? -Carol Turner (learnseewithme.com)

All forms of communication are important in the development of language in children.  Dialogue between parent and child is a major pathway for children to learn vocabulary and sentence structure.

Parents of deaf children face many choices when deciding on which mode of communication to use with their child.

A high percentage of deaf children are born to hearing parents.

These parents often find learning to sign SEE easier for them as it matches their spoken words.

Mastering ASL grammar and syntax rules can often be more difficult for parents to learn at first. It is however important that ASL be a part of the family’s’ continuing education of signs as the child matures.

SEE (Signing Exact English) is a manual system that represents spoken and written English

ASL (American Sign Language) is a language of its own with grammar and syntax rules.

SEE does not exclude the use of ASL or other sign languages.

Seventy-five percent of SEE signs come from ASL.

The SEE dictionary first printed in 1972.

SEE was developed to be used in the educational setting of young deaf children as well as a means of communication within the child and his family.
